Patagonia Tools for Activists 2009 Conference - In-depth Workshop: Google Earth & Maps

GOOGLE EARTH

Exercise 1. Annotate Google Earth

1. Click here to visit the "Annotating Google Earth" tutorial. (You can always visit this tutorial later to repeat this exercise!)

2. View the video tutorial:

3. Follow along with the instructor.  Be sure to:

  • Create at least 3 points.
  • Create at least 1 path or line.
  • Create at least 1 polygon.
  • Embed at least 1 image and 1 video in the balloons.

4. To add a photograph to the pop-up balloons, you will need to find a photo online. We have built a great PicasaWeb photo gallery for you to use:

  • Go to http://picasaweb.google.com/
  • Login in as the following:
    • User Name: earth.outreach.trainer
    • Password: mapsarefun!
  • Click on an album of interest, and a photo of interest.
  • Click "Link to this photo" at the right, and copy HTML code into Properties dialog box of your Google Earth placemark.

Extra time? You can also embed entire slideshows, and have them auto-play when people click on the placemark!

5. To add a YouTube video to the pop-up balloon, you will need to find a YouTube video online. We have built a great YouTube page for you to use:
  • Click here to go to the YouTube channel.
  • Login in as the following:
    • User Name: earth.outreach.trainers
    • Password: mapsarefun!
  • Click on a video that interests you.
  • Copy the embed code and paste it into the Properties dialog box of your Google Earth placemark.

Exercise 2. Adding Photo and Image Overlays to Google Earth

1. Click here to visit the "Creating Photos & Image Overlays in Google Earth" tutorial. (You can always visit this tutorial later to repeat this exercise!)

2. View the video tutorial:

3. Follow along with the instructor.  Be sure to:

  • Create at least 1 image overlay.

4. To easily find a map for the image overlay, and a photo for the photo overlay, you can use the PicasaWeb photo gallery:

  • Go to http://picasaweb.google.com/
  • Login in as the following:
    • User Name: earth.outreach.trainers
    • Password: mapsarefun!
  • Click on the album entitled, "Maps for Image Overlays" to find maps for image overlays. Click on other albums to find photographs to add as photo overlays.


Exercise 3. Create a narrated tour in Google Earth

  • Try creating at least 1 tour, and save it as a .KMZ file on your computer somewhere.


Exercise 4. Embedding Earth in a blog

  • Embed one Google Earth project in a blog.

4. To help you with this exercise, be sure to:

  • Log-in to Google Sites to upload your Google Earth KMZ file.
    • User Name: earth.outreach.trainers
    • Password: mapsarefun!
  • Go to the Embed KML or Embed Tour gadget to copy the code.
  • Paste it into a Blogger blog!
